Urgent steps

Someone Was Arrested Today in Hennepin County

Watch for payment scams.

The Sheriff warns that scammers contact families of people in custody or recently released. The Sheriff’s Office will not call demanding payment. Hang up and verify bail through the jail at 612-348-5112.

Confirm the arresting agency

Find out whether the arrest involved Minneapolis Police, a suburban department, the Hennepin County Sheriff, Minnesota State Patrol or a federal agency.

Search the official jail roster

Open the Hennepin County Jail Roster. Search the full name and compare the age, booking number, charges and court information.

Allow time for intake

A recently arrested person may not appear until a booking number has been assigned. Call 612-348-5112 when the arrest occurred recently and the search returns nothing.

Write down the identifiers

Save the booking number, PAK or personal identification number, court case number, charge and scheduled hearing information.

Check the court case

Open Minnesota Court Records Online and search by name or case number. Select Hennepin County when narrowing the results.

Contact legal counsel

Contact a private criminal lawyer or the Fourth District Public Defender at 612-348-7530. The judge and official court record control bail and hearing requirements.

Jail roster

How to Search the Hennepin County Jail Roster

The Sheriff’s roster is the correct starting point for current county custody and recent releases. It can also display charges, bail and scheduled court dates.

Open the official roster

Go directly to jailroster.hennepin.us. Avoid search-result advertisements that imitate an inmate-search form.

Search the surname first

Start with the last name. Add the first name when the result list is broad. Try a former surname or spelling variation when necessary.

Open the likely result

Compare the complete name, age, booking number, booking date, custody status, charge descriptions, bail and court date.

Save the PAK and case number

The PAK is used for money deposits. The court case number is used in MCRO. These identifiers serve different purposes.

Check the court record

A roster charge reflects booking or custody information. Open MCRO to check the filed case, Register of Actions and later disposition.

Call if the record is missing

Contact the jail at 612-348-5112 when the arrest is recent, the spelling is uncertain or the person may be housed at the separate City Hall jail location.

Roster timing: The Sheriff states that the public roster is updated hourly. A person in intake may not appear until staff assign a booking number.
Identity check

Make Sure the Arrest Record Belongs to the Correct Person

  • Compare the full legal name, not only the surname.
  • Check age or date-of-birth information when available.
  • Confirm the booking date and arresting agency.
  • Compare the booking number or PAK.
  • Check the court case number in MCRO.
  • Review aliases, maiden names and alternate spellings.
  • Confirm that Hennepin County is the filing county.
  • Do not identify someone publicly from a name-only match.
A similar name is not enough.

Common names can connect an unrelated person to the wrong jail or court record. Use multiple identifiers before relying on a result.

Court verification

Search Hennepin County Criminal Court Records in MCRO

Minnesota Court Records Online provides remote access to many public district-court cases and documents. The Judicial Branch warns that MCRO is a public access service, not the certified official court record.

Open MCRO Case Search

Use the official MCRO Case Search.

Select a person-name search

Enter the last name and first name. MCRO also supports case number, citation number, attorney and bar-number searches.

Use Hennepin County as a filter

Narrow results to Hennepin County District Court when the case was filed in the Fourth Judicial District.

Use fewer fields first

Start with the name. Add a date of birth, date range or other option only when too many results appear.

Open the Register of Actions

Review charges, hearings, filings, bail, warrants, dispositions, sentences and available public documents.

Request a certified copy if needed

Contact the Hennepin Records Center. A certified copy currently carries a $14-per-document copy fee unless the court has waived the fee.

Name-search tip: MCRO allows a trailing wildcard after at least two characters and also offers a “Sounds Like” option. Do not use both methods at the same time.

Release processing

Confirm the current amount

Check the jail roster and MCRO, then call 612-348-5112. Be ready to provide the detainee’s full name and date of birth.

Bring the case or warrant number

The Public Safety Facility’s in-custody records window requires the case or warrant number when bail is posted.

Bring the exact cash amount

Cash bail can be posted 24 hours a day at the Public Safety Facility. The jail does not provide change and has no cash machine on site.

Do not bring a check or card

The Sheriff currently states that checks, debit cards and credit cards are not accepted for cash bail at the jail.

Use an approved bond agent

The jail accepts authorized bonds from state-approved bond agents. Verify approval through the Minnesota Judicial Branch Bail Bond Program.

Check for other holds

Posting one bail amount may not result in release when another warrant, case, detainer or hold remains.

Never pay from an unsolicited demand.

Call the jail or court using the official numbers on this page before sending money. A legitimate office will not pressure a family to pay through gift cards, cryptocurrency or an unfamiliar payment app.

Warrants

Hennepin County Warrant Help and Court Scheduling

Hennepin Criminal Court Warrant Helpline

The court helpline can provide warrant information and may help schedule a court date to address a Hennepin County case.

Important warrant warning

Scheduling a hearing by telephone does not automatically cancel or suspend an active warrant. The court states that a person may still be arrested until the warrant is addressed in court.

  • Ask whether personal appearance is required.
  • Confirm the courthouse and room.
  • Check whether bail must be posted.
  • Tell your lawyer about the warrant.

Why Someone May Disappear From the Hennepin Jail Roster

Intake Booking is still being completed

The person may not appear until staff assign a booking number. Call the jail for a same-day arrest.

Release The person left county custody

Check MCRO for the release decision and Minnesota VINE for available custody-status information.

Transfer The person moved to another facility

Check the Adult Corrections Facility, Minnesota DOC Public Viewer or another county.

Federal The case involves federal custody

Search the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator using the full name or register number.

Name issue The record uses another spelling

Try the surname alone, an earlier surname or a known alias.

Restricted The matter is not public

Juvenile, sealed, expunged and restricted records may not appear in a public search.

    BCA records

Search Minnesota Public Criminal History Through the BCA

The Minnesota Public Criminal History Search is a free service operated by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

    Open the official CHS website

    Go to chs.state.mn.us.

    Enter the required identity details

The public search requires a first name, last name and date of birth.

    Review possible matches carefully

Compare all identifying details. A nickname, misspelling or former surname can affect the result.

    Understand the public-data limit

BCA states that public conviction information is available for 15 years after completion of the sentence.

Do not treat it as an arrest-history search

The public CHS service does not include an individual’s arrest history.

Contact BCA for a full record request

    Private records require a different process. BCA’s criminal-history phone is 651-793-2400, Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

A “no records found” result has several possible meanings. The name may be incorrect, the data may not be public, the record may use a former name or another agency may maintain information not available in BCA’s public search.

    Minnesota VINE for county-jail custody
