Someone Was Arrested Today: What to Do First

  1. Confirm the arresting agency and county. The city name alone may not identify the correct jail.
  2. Allow time for booking, fingerprinting and the online inmate entry to be created.
  3. Search the official county jail portal with the last name first and fewer filters.
  4. Write down the jail number, booking number, charges, bond fields and facility location.
  5. Call the detention center when the arrest is recent or the portal shows no result.
  6. Use the county clerk to track the criminal case and first court events.

Payment warning: Never send bond money because of an unsolicited call or message. Confirm the inmate, bond status, accepted payment method and payee directly with the jail or clerk.

Florida does not use one public portal for every county criminal case. Trial-court records are generally searched through the Clerk of Court for the county handling the case. Appellate ACIS is for Florida appellate courts, not an ordinary county arrest case.

How to Find a Florida County Jail Booking

Identify the county Use the arresting agency, city and booking information. Near county lines, the city may not reveal which sheriff operates the jail.
Open the sheriff or county corrections website Look for “Inmate Search,” “Arrest Inquiry,” “Current Inmates,” “Booking Blotter” or “Who’s in Jail.”
Search with fewer fields Enter the surname first. Add a first name, age or date only when the list is too broad.
Open the matching record Compare date of birth, booking date, mugshot, jail number, arresting agency and charge descriptions.
Save the identifiers Record the jail number, booking number, bond status, court location and facility phone before leaving the page.
Call if the arrest is fresh Booking data can be delayed. Ask whether intake is complete and which portal or facility holds the current record.

How to Order a Florida Criminal History Record Check

FDLE provides statewide Florida criminal-history searches. A county booking search is usually better for immediate custody, while FDLE is the correct route when you need a broader Florida criminal-history response.

Instant Search

Online results are available immediately for printing or email, but the result is not certified.

Certified or non-certified request

Use the certified/non-certified route when the receiving organization requires a specific format.

Current listed cost

FDLE lists $24 per search plus a $1 credit-card processing fee for its public online search.

Open Florida Checks Use the official FDLE Florida Checks page and compare the available request types.
Choose the result format Select Instant Search for an immediate non-certified result, or the certified/non-certified service when documentation requirements demand it.
Enter identifying information carefully Use the most accurate legal name and requested identifiers. A name-based search can return records belonging to another person with similar details.
Review before paying Confirm the person details, fee and output type. The search charge applies even when no matching Florida record is returned.
Save the result securely Download, print or email the result and record the search date. Protect personal identifying information.
Contact FDLE for record-check support Call 850-410-8161 during published hours, Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Eastern, for Criminal History Services questions.
Scope warning: A Florida FDLE search is not the same as a nationwide fingerprint-based background check, a current warrant confirmation or a county jail search. Use the source required for the specific purpose.

Bond, Release, Public Defender and Florida Lawyer Help

Checking bond

Use the county inmate record and clerk docket to identify the amount, bond type, court and any holds. A displayed bond does not guarantee immediate release.

Release delays

Release can remain pending because of another charge, warrant, hold, paperwork, payment confirmation, transportation or facility processing.

Public Defender

Florida has a Public Defender office in each judicial circuit. Court appointment depends on the case and financial eligibility.

Private lawyer referral

The Florida Bar Lawyer Referral Service accepts calls at 800-342-8011, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m.; online requests are available 24/7.

Before paying a bond

Confirm the correct person and booking number.
Ask whether every charge is bondable.
Check for outside warrants or holds.
Verify the accepted payment method.
Confirm the official payee and location.
Keep the receipt and transaction number.

Finding legal help

Find the correct judicial circuit Use the county where the criminal case is pending, not the county where a family member currently lives.
Locate the Public Defender office Use the Florida Public Defender office directory and select the circuit or county.
Ask about appointment and application The court determines appointment. Ask the clerk or Public Defender office what financial form, fee or supporting information is required.
Use a private referral when appropriate Open the Florida Bar Lawyer Referral Service or call 800-342-8011.
Verify the lawyer Use the Florida Bar member search and obtain a written fee agreement. Avoid anyone guaranteeing a release or case result.

Florida Jail Visitation, Calls, Mail and Inmate Money

Check the holding agency before using any rule below. County jails set their own visitation, phone, mail and deposit procedures. Florida Department of Corrections rules apply to state prisons, not automatically to county detainees.
Visitation

Confirm approval, scheduling, photo ID, age rules, dress code, arrival time and whether the visit is in person or video.

Phone calls

Inmates normally initiate calls. Use only the phone provider linked by the facility and check blocked-number support.

Mail

Use the exact inmate name, identifier and mailing address. Follow rules for photos, cards, books and return addresses.

Money

Confirm whether the deposit is for commissary, phone or another account. Use only the provider shown by the facility.

State-prison visitation route

Confirm the inmate is with FDC Use Offender Search and open the current institution information.
Read FDC visiting information Use the visiting section linked from the Florida Department of Corrections website and review the institution-specific directions.
Submit the current application FDC publishes the Request for Visiting Privileges form. People age 12 and older who want to visit must follow the current application instructions.
Wait for approval Do not travel until the inmate confirms approval and the institution confirms the visiting schedule.
Recheck before leaving Institution status, lockdowns, weather and operational changes can affect visits.
Transfer problem: When calls stop or mail is returned, search the person again. A move from county jail to another county, FDC, federal custody or release can change the address, provider and visitation procedure.
Victim and safety routing

Florida Seal and Expunge Process: Where to Start

Adult Florida criminal-history information is generally public unless it is sealed or expunged under applicable law. Dismissal alone does not automatically remove every arrest record or private copy.

Get the final disposition Use the county clerk to obtain the case outcome and any certified document required for the application.
Review FDLE eligibility information Open the official FDLE Seal and Expunge Process and read the eligibility, denial and application guidance.
Apply for a Certificate of Eligibility The FDLE certificate application is the first step before asking a court to order sealing or expungement.
Follow the court filing route A Certificate of Eligibility does not itself seal or expunge the record. Follow the court and county filing process.
Keep copies Save the arrest report, certified disposition, certificate, petition and final court order.
Check later copies separately After official processing, verify FDLE and court records, then request updates from private publishers using redacted official documentation.
FDLE seal-and-expunge contact: 850-410-7870. Status questions may require a copy of government-issued photo identification. Use the official contact instructions before sending sensitive documents.
Problem solving

Why a Florida Arrest or Inmate Search Shows No Result

The arrest is too recent for online booking data.
The person was booked under a different spelling or alias.
The city and jail are in different counties.
The person was released and removed from a current-inmate list.
The person transferred to FDC or another county.
The case is federal rather than state or county.
The record is juvenile, confidential, sealed or expunged.
The portal requires JavaScript, a captcha or pop-ups.
I know the city but not the jail

Find the arresting agency, identify its county, then use the county sheriff or corrections search.

The inmate disappeared from the county list

Check release data, historical bookings, FDC Offender Search, VINE and nearby counties.

The arrest charge and court charge differ

Use the county clerk docket. Booking language can differ from charges later filed by the prosecutor.

Bond is shown but release has not happened

Confirm payment, all charges, outside holds and release processing directly with the facility.

I need a certified outcome

Request a certified disposition from the Clerk of Court handling the case, not from a mugshot website.

A dismissed arrest still appears online

Review FDLE eligibility first, complete any court process, then request private-site updates with official proof.

Questions answered

Florida Arrest Records Search FAQs

How do I search for a recent arrest in Florida?

Identify the arresting county and use that county sheriff or corrections department’s official inmate search. Start with the last name, compare the booking date and identifying details, and call the facility when the arrest is too recent to appear online.

Is there one statewide Florida jail inmate search?

No. Florida county jails are operated locally, so recent bookings are normally searched through the appropriate county sheriff or corrections portal. Florida Department of Corrections Offender Search is for state-prison and related offender records, not every county detainee.

How much does an FDLE Florida criminal-history search cost?

FDLE currently lists a $24 fee for each public online criminal-history search plus a $1 credit-card processing fee. The search charge applies regardless of whether the system returns a matching Florida record.

Does an FDLE criminal-history search show current jail custody?

It is not the best source for immediate county custody. Use the official county inmate search for a recent booking and FDC Offender Search when the person may be in Florida state prison.

Where do I find the outcome of a Florida criminal case?

Use the Clerk of Court in the county handling the case. Search by case number or legal name, then review the docket, filed charges, hearings and disposition. Request a certified disposition from the clerk when official proof is required.

Why does a Florida inmate record show bond but no release?

A bond amount does not guarantee immediate release. Another charge, warrant, hold, incomplete payment, court condition or facility processing may delay release. Confirm every charge and hold directly with the jail or clerk.

How do I find a Public Defender in Florida?

Find the judicial circuit for the county where the case is pending, then use the Florida Public Defender office directory. Ask the clerk or Public Defender office about court appointment, financial eligibility and the required application process.

How do I arrange a Florida inmate visit?

First confirm whether the person is in a county jail or an FDC state prison. Read that facility’s current visitor approval, scheduling, identification, dress-code and age rules. Do not travel until approval and the visiting schedule are confirmed.

Can I receive Florida inmate release notifications?

Florida VINE provides participating custody information and notification registration. You can use VINELink online or call 1-877-846-3435. FDC Victim Services also provides assistance for qualifying state-prison notifications.

Does a dismissed Florida charge disappear from public records automatically?

No. A dismissal does not automatically erase the arrest history or every online copy. Review FDLE seal-and-expunge eligibility, obtain the final court disposition, complete any required court process and then request private-site updates with redacted official documentation.
