Chicago Police Arrest Search, Cook County Jail and Court Lookup

Start with the correct source

Chicago arrest records are split across police, jail and court systems

A CPD arrest page, Cook County custody record and court docket answer different questions. Use the table below before searching so you do not mistake an old police record for current jail status.

Best official starting point for each Chicago record task
What you need
Correct source
Prepare first
What to verify
Chicago Police adult arrest
Name, age, arrest date, location or Central Booking Number

Important limitation: A Chicago Police arrest search does not include arrests made only by the Cook County Sheriff, Illinois State Police, suburban departments or federal agencies.
Prevent a false match

Confirm the person before relying on a Chicago arrest listing

Chicago contains many people with similar names. Match several independent details before treating an arrest result as belonging to the person you are researching.

Full legal name and middle name or initial
Age at the time of arrest
Booking photograph
Central Booking Number
Arrest date and approximate time
Arrest location
Police district, area or beat
Cook County court case number
Similar name but different age or booking number? Stop and search again. Do not post, share or identify someone publicly from a name-only match.
Reports, arrest cards and FOIA

How to request a Chicago Police report or additional arrest record

The public arrest search is designed for quick record discovery. Use CPD’s records or Freedom of Information Act routes when you need an incident report, arrest documentation or another existing department record.

Police Records and Procedures

Use this route for available case reports, traffic-crash reports, arrest records and instructions for obtaining a personal Chicago criminal-history record.

Open CPD record instructions
Freedom of Information Act request

Use FOIA to request an identifiable existing CPD record that is not available through a simpler public-record service. Some information may be redacted or legally exempt.

Open the CPD FOIA page

Prepare these details before requesting a record

Report or RD number, when known
Incident or arrest date
Location of the incident
Type of report requested
Names connected with the record
Preferred delivery method
Identification or authorisation, when required
A focused description of the requested document
Chicago Police Records Customer Service Section
Write a narrow request. Asking for a specific report, date, location and record type is usually clearer than asking for “everything” connected with a person.
Current Illinois release process

Chicago first appearance, pretrial release and detention

Illinois no longer uses cash bail for current pretrial release decisions. A judge decides whether the person should be released with conditions or detained under the applicable legal standards.

Typical information route after a Chicago arrest
Held overnight

The Cook County Public Defender states that a person held in police custody overnight will have a First Appearance within 48 hours.

Location and time vary

The First Appearance location depends on the arrest location, accusation, custody status and day of the week.

Main Chicago courthouse

Many in-custody Chicago matters are routed through the George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building at 2600 S. California Avenue.

Confirm the exact courtroom

Check the official First Appearance schedule or call 773-674-5882 before travelling.

What family members can prepare for the defense attorney

Current home address
Reliable telephone number
Work schedule or employment proof
School schedule when relevant
Recent utility bill showing community ties
Information about medical or caregiving responsibilities
Do not pay a private bail-bond company for a new Illinois pretrial case. Illinois ended cash bail, and commercial bail bondsmen have long been prohibited in the state. Use the court order, attorney and official Sheriff or Clerk information to understand release conditions.
Check the official First Appearance court schedule
Cook County Jail visitors

How to apply for and schedule Cook County Jail visitation

Do not travel to the jail before checking the person’s current housing division, submitting the required visitor application and confirming approval.

Find the individual and housing division

Use the Individual in Custody Locator. The division controls the entrance and visitation schedule.

Submit one application for that individual

The Sheriff requires a completed visitor application before the first visit. A separate application is required for each individual you wish to visit.

Allow time for the background check

Wait seven business days after submission before asking about application status.

Confirm approval

Call the Visitor Information Center at 773-674-8225 or email doc.visitation@cookcountyil.gov.

Open the correct division schedule

Check the official visitation schedules and confirm the division entrance, day, time and housing-unit group.

Schedule the visit

Use the official in-person visitation scheduling portal only after approval.

Important visitor rules

Bring the identification required by the Sheriff
Confirm the individual has not changed divisions
Follow the published clothing rules
Do not bring prohibited items
Arrive at the entrance listed for the division
Expect a security and identity check
Children and applications: The Sheriff states that minors age 17 or younger do not complete a visitor application, but they must be accompanied by an approved parent or guardian. A high-school-age minor must present a current state or school photo ID. Up to three children may accompany one approved adult.
Approval is not automatic. The Sheriff conducts a background check and publishes conditions that may result in denial. Read the current list on the locator before submitting an application.

Read current mail rules
Trust account

Use only the deposit channels listed by the Sheriff. You will need the exact custody name and Booking Identification Number.

Records relief

How to start expungement or sealing in Illinois

A dismissal or not-guilty result does not necessarily erase every adult police and court record automatically. Eligibility depends on the complete history and outcome, so use the current statewide forms or a legal-help screening route.

Obtain your complete record information

Collect the arrest number, case number, charge, outcome, arresting agency and court location for each matter you want reviewed.

Check the current eligibility rules

Use the official Illinois forms instructions or a legal-aid screening tool. Do not assume every arrest, supervision or conviction qualifies for the same relief.

Download the approved statewide forms

Open the Illinois Courts Expungement and Sealing page. Illinois courts must accept the approved statewide forms.

Use the free Easy Form when helpful

The Illinois Courts page links to a guided Illinois Legal Aid interview that asks questions and prepares the appropriate documents.

File in the correct court

Follow the current Cook County filing instructions for the courthouse connected with the case. Ask about fee-waiver eligibility when filing costs are a problem.

Keep the signed order and verify updates

Save the final court order. Later check the CPD search, court docket and Illinois State Police record as appropriate before requesting a private-site update.

Current forms matter. The Illinois Courts page lists updated adult expungement and sealing forms approved in June 2026. Download the latest version rather than using an old saved packet.
Need help evaluating eligibility? The Cook County Public Defender notes that records relief is a separate civil process and directs users to organisations such as Legal Aid Chicago and Cabrini Green Legal Aid.

Real user situations

Fast Chicago arrest-record routes by situation

Arrested within the last few hours

Call the 24/7 Arrest Hotline, confirm the police station and wait for booking information before assuming jail transfer.

CPD shows release information

Check the Cook County locator and court docket. Release from a police facility does not explain the complete case status.

Person is in Cook County Jail

Save the booking number, check the housing division and use it for visitation, mail, funds and discharge tracking.

No cash-bond amount appears

That is expected under current Illinois pretrial law. Check the First Appearance decision and written release conditions.

Cannot afford a private lawyer

Ask the court for Public Defender appointment. The judge reviews the financial affidavit and decides eligibility.

Case dismissed but arrest remains

Review expungement eligibility and use the current Illinois statewide forms before requesting private-site removal.

Need a victim court alert

Register through Cook County victim notification or contact the Victim Witness Unit.

Possible state or federal transfer

Check the Illinois Department of Corrections or Federal Bureau of Prisons locator after confirming no Cook County custody record.

Need proof rather than a web result

Request the relevant CPD document or certified court record from the agency that maintains it.
