Start With the Source That Answers Your Question

Current custody

Use RIDOC Incarceration Search. Rhode Island combines jail and prison custody under one state department.

Court outcome

Use the Rhode Island Judiciary Public Portal for a public register of actions or docket.

Official state history

Use the Attorney General’s BCI service. The current state-background-check fee is $5.

Arrest is not conviction

Confirm identity, filed charges and disposition before relying on any arrest listing.

Someone was arrested today?

Call the arresting police department first if the person does not yet appear in RIDOC. Ask whether the person remains at the station, has been transported to the ACI, or has been released after a bail-commissioner arraignment. Do not send money from an unsolicited call without independently confirming the agency and bail instructions.

Rhode Island difference

Rhode Island Does Not Use the Normal County-Jail Model

Rhode Island operates a unified correctional system. RIDOC manages both pretrial detention and sentenced state custody at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston. That means a person arrested in Providence, Kent, Newport, Washington or Bristol County may ultimately be searched through the same RIDOC incarceration system.

Male pretrial detainees

The Anthony P. Travisono Intake Service Center serves as Rhode Island’s jail for male offenders.

Federal custody is separate

A federal defendant may not appear in RIDOC. Use the federal locator when the arrest involved a federal agency or federal court.

Search the federal inmate locator
Important timing issue: A fresh arrest may remain in police custody while booking, arraignment or transport is being processed. Search RIDOC again later and call the arresting agency when the event happened only a few hours ago.

How to Search the RIDOC Incarceration Database

Open the official RIDOC search

Use the RIDOC Incarceration Search. Read the disclaimer before relying on the information.

Search with the fewest details first

Begin with the last name. Add the first name or other identifier only when the result list is too broad.

Compare the correct person

Check the full name, age or birth information, inmate ID, custody location and status. A name-only match is not enough.

Open the facility page

Use RIDOC’s facility directory to confirm the address, facility phone, mail address and visitation guidance.

Call when the online result is unclear

Use RIDOC General Information at 401-462-1000, Records & ID at 401-462-3900, Bail Information at 401-462-2261, or the 24-hour friends-and-family information line at 401-414-2871.

Search surname only when spelling is uncertain.
Check whether the arrest was state or federal.
Allow time for transport from a police station.
Use the inmate ID for deposits and mail.
Confirm the facility before arranging a visit.
Record the date and time of your search.
Official criminal history

How to Obtain a Rhode Island BCI Background Check

The Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation is the central state route for Rhode Island criminal-history checks. A BCI report is different from a police arrest report, RIDOC custody search or court docket.

State check fee

$5 under the Attorney General’s current background-check guidance.

BCI location

4 Howard Avenue, Cranston, RI 02920, at Pontiac and Howard avenues.

Counter hours

Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; fingerprint processing stops at 4:00 p.m.

Main phone

401-274-4400. Closed on state holidays.

Choose the correct check

Use a state BCI check for Rhode Island criminal history. A national fingerprint-based check is a separate service with different requirements and fees.

Review the official instructions

Open the Attorney General’s background-check page and select the method that fits your request.

Prepare the required identification

Follow the current instructions for photo identification, authorization and payment. A request for another person’s record may require a signed and notarized release.

Check the completed report carefully

Compare the name and identifying details. A sealed or expunged record should not appear in the BCI report after the official process is complete.

Do not confuse a BCI report with a consumer report. Employment, housing, credit and similar decisions may involve federal and state legal requirements beyond a public-record search.
Court verification

Search Rhode Island Criminal Court Cases and Dockets

The Judiciary Public Portal provides remote access to the public register of actions or docket. Public remote users generally see docket activity rather than every electronic document. Courthouse terminals provide broader access to public electronic case information during regular clerk-office hours.

Open the official public portal

Go to the Rhode Island Judiciary Public Portal. Enable JavaScript if the portal does not load correctly.

Choose a case-search option

Search by the legal name or case number. Use fewer fields first to avoid hiding a result because of a spelling or date mismatch.

Match the court and case

Compare the court, case number, filing date, parties and charge descriptions. District Court commonly handles misdemeanors and initial felony arraignments; felony cases may proceed to Superior Court.

Read the complete docket

Review arraignment, bail, hearings, filings, disposition and sentence entries. Do not rely only on the first charge shown.

Use a courthouse terminal when needed

The Judiciary explains that public terminals are available in courthouse clerk offices for public electronic case information that is not sealed or confidential.

Bail and release

How Rhode Island Bail and Release Checks Work

Most felony charges are initially arraigned in District Court, where bail may be set and monitored before a case moves to Superior Court. A bail commissioner may also arraign and release a person from police custody, but the defendant must still attend the formal District Court arraignment.

Police-station release

A bail commissioner may conduct an arraignment at the police station. The commissioner charges a non-refundable fee, and a later formal court arraignment is still required.

Call 401-462-2261 for RIDOC bail information after a person has entered the ACI system.

Police and arrest reports

How to Request a Rhode Island Arrest or Police Record

An arresting agency’s incident or arrest report is different from a statewide BCI report and a court docket. Request the report from the police department that created it. Disclosure can be limited by ongoing-investigation, juvenile, privacy, sealed-record and other legal exemptions.

Identify the arresting agency

Use the booking information, press release, citation or court docket to determine which police department holds the original record.

Find the agency’s official records or APRA page

Do not send personal information to a third-party records site. Use the municipality or state-police domain.

Describe the record precisely

Provide the incident number when known, date, location, involved person and the specific report requested. Avoid requesting every record when a narrower request will do.

Keep the confirmation

Save the email, form confirmation, staff contact and any estimated copying fee or response date.

State Police records: Use the Rhode Island State Police public-information page. Its public-record procedure provides records-office contact and request instructions.

Rhode Island Sealing and Expungement Steps

Eligibility depends on the case, outcome, conviction history, waiting periods and current law. A dismissed or acquitted case may follow a different sealing or destruction route from an eligible conviction.

Confirm the exact case and court

Use the Judiciary Public Portal and obtain the case number, court, disposition and financial-obligation status.

Review eligibility guidance

Use the Attorney General’s expungement eligibility page and the Judiciary’s judicial expungement guidance.

File in the court of conviction

The Judiciary provides District, Family and Superior Court motion forms. The clerk assigns the hearing date.

Give required notice

The Judiciary explains that the hearing is set at least ten days after filing because notice must be provided to the Attorney General and charging police department.

Complete the post-order steps

Financial obligations must be paid or waived. The clerk prepares three certified copies; the applicant is responsible for delivering copies to BCI and the charging police department.

Verify the update later

After processing, obtain a new BCI report when appropriate and check whether public court access reflects the order.

Do not assume eligibility from a generic checklist. Ask a lawyer or the court when the record involves multiple cases, domestic violence, a felony, probation violations or an out-of-state matter.

Problem-solving scenarios

What to Do in Common Rhode Island Record Situations

Arrest happened a few hours ago

Call the police station, ask whether transport occurred, then retry RIDOC. Do not assume a missing online result means release.

RIDOC result disappeared

Check release, transfer, spelling and federal custody. Call the 24-hour family line with the inmate ID when available.

Court portal shows several people

Compare court, case number, filing date and birth information. Never identify someone from a name alone.

Bail was paid but release is delayed

Ask whether paperwork is complete and whether another hold or case applies. Do not promise a release time.

Case was dismissed but record remains

Check sealing eligibility, file the correct motion if required and deliver certified orders to the agencies identified by the court.

You need a police report

Request it from the arresting agency’s official records or APRA office, not from BCI or RIDOC.

Frequently asked questions

Rhode Island Arrest Records FAQs

Where can I search Rhode Island arrest records online?

Use the RIDOC Incarceration Search for current state custody and the Rhode Island Judiciary Public Portal for public criminal case dockets. Request the original arrest or incident report from the police agency that made the arrest. These sources answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Does Rhode Island have county jail inmate searches?

Rhode Island operates a unified correctional system rather than the usual county-jail model. RIDOC manages pretrial detention and state-prison custody at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston, so the statewide RIDOC search is the main custody lookup.

How do I find someone arrested today in Rhode Island?

Call the arresting police department first when the arrest happened only a few hours ago. Ask whether the person remains at the station, was released by a bail commissioner, or was transported to RIDOC. Then retry the RIDOC Incarceration Search after booking and transport have had time to process.

How much does a Rhode Island BCI background check cost?

The Rhode Island Attorney General currently lists a $5 fee for a state background check. National fingerprint-based checks are separate and can have different fees and requirements, so review the official BCI instructions before submitting the request.

What is the difference between a BCI check and the court portal?

A BCI check is an official Rhode Island criminal-history response from the Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Identification. The Judiciary Public Portal displays public court docket activity. A police arrest report, RIDOC custody record, BCI report and court docket are different records maintained for different purposes.

How can I check bail information for a Rhode Island inmate?

Confirm the case through the police department or court and call RIDOC Bail Information at 401-462-2261 when the person is in the ACI system. Verify the defendant, case, bail type, amount, conditions and any additional holds before making a payment or promising a release time.

How do I apply for a Rhode Island Public Defender?

A judge may refer a person who cannot afford private counsel to apply. After referral, complete a Public Defender intake interview as soon as possible and preferably at least one week before the next court date. Bring financial information, case details, witness information and relevant evidence.

How do I visit or send money to a Rhode Island inmate?

First confirm the inmate’s current RIDOC facility. Read that facility’s visitation schedule and approval rules before travelling. RIDOC directs approved inmate-account deposits through Access Corrections. Use only the official inmate-account instructions and the correct inmate ID.

How do I request a Rhode Island police arrest report?

Request the report from the police department that created it. Use the department’s official records or Access to Public Records page, describe the incident precisely and save the request confirmation. BCI, RIDOC and the court portal do not replace the arresting agency’s original report.

Can a Rhode Island arrest or conviction record be sealed or expunged?

Some records may qualify, but eligibility depends on the case, outcome, conviction history, waiting period and current law. Review the Attorney General’s eligibility guidance and the Judiciary’s court forms. File in the correct court and complete the required notice, financial and certified-copy steps.
