New Jersey Criminal History, Court Case and Inmate Lookup Guide
Need a New Jersey arrest record quickly? This guide routes you to the correct official system for a criminal case, your own fingerprint-based history, a municipal complaint, a county jail, an NJDOC inmate, pretrial information or expungement—without treating an arrest as proof of guilt.
Choose the Right New Jersey Record in Under a Minute
Use PROMIS/Gavel through NJ Courts. Search by defendant name, county, indictment, accusation or complaint information.
Use the NJSP fingerprint-based Personal Record Request—not the public court search and not a mugshot database.
Use NJDOC Offender Search. County-jail detainees may not appear because local custody is managed separately.
Identify the arresting agency and county first. A fresh booking can take time to appear online.
Use Municipal Court Case Search for municipal traffic or complaint information.
Use Criminal Judgments Public Access to look for judgments, including judgments of conviction.
Ask the court for the Uniform Defendant Intake, or 5A Form, and provide the requested financial information.
Use the free NJ Courts eCourts Expungement System and begin with the case number.
Tell the Guide What You Need
Select the task. The helper runs in your browser and does not request a name, birth date or case number.
Search a New Jersey Criminal Case by Name or County
Use the NJ Courts “Find a Case” page as the safe starting point. It separates Superior Court criminal cases, municipal matters and criminal judgments so you do not search the wrong database.
Use Municipal Court Case Search for municipal complaints and traffic matters.
Use Criminal Judgments Public Access when you specifically need a judgment search.
Use the NJ Courts court-record request process when the public index does not provide the document you need.
Request Your Own New Jersey Criminal History
When you need your own official New Jersey criminal-history record—for accuracy review, immigration, licensing or another personal purpose—use the NJSP fingerprint-based Personal Record Request route.
Find a County Jail Detainee or NJDOC Inmate
The most common New Jersey inmate-search mistake is using NJDOC for someone who was arrested recently and remains in county custody.
Situation | Where to search | What to prepare | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
Arrested today or recently | Arresting county sheriff or county corrections site | Legal name, arresting agency, date and county | Booking number, facility, status, first appearance and release information |
Sentenced to state prison | Name, SBI number or other identifier | Facility, custody status, sentence and projected information shown | |
Paroled offender | Name and NJDOC/SBI details | Whether the question belongs to parole rather than current prison custody | |
Federal custody | Name or federal register number | Institution and release information |

Understand New Jersey Pretrial Release Before Calling a Bail Company
New Jersey largely replaced money-based bail with a risk-based pretrial system. A first appearance generally occurs within 48 hours after arrest and commitment, when the court considers release conditions or detention.
- Has the first appearance occurred?
- Was the person released, detained or given conditions?
- Is another warrant or hold affecting release?
- Which court and county now handle the case?
- A dollar amount must be paid in every case.
- An online booking status guarantees immediate release.
- A commercial bond company controls the court’s decision.
- A release condition can be ignored after leaving jail.
Apply for a Public Defender or Find a Private Criminal Lawyer
- Ask the court for the Uniform Defendant Intake, also called the 5A Form.
- Provide residence, employment, income, assets, expenses, debts and requested criminal-history information.
- Tell the court if an interpreter is required.
- Wait for the court’s eligibility decision.
- Use the NJOPD application guidance and regional-office information.
- Use the New Jersey State Bar county referral directory.
- Select the county where the criminal case is pending.
- Ask whether the referral service handles criminal matters.
- Confirm the lawyer’s experience, consultation terms and fee structure.
- Get the scope and fee agreement in writing; avoid anyone promising a guaranteed result.

Visits, Calls, Messages, Mail and Money for NJDOC Inmates
These statewide rules apply to NJDOC facilities. County-jail rules and providers can be different, so always use the facility’s own official page.
All NJDOC visits are by appointment, must generally be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance, and every adult or minor visitor must be on the approved visit list. Check the facility visitation page for the correct scheduling number, registration time and dress rules.
Use the current NJDOC ViaPath transition page and Staying Connected guidance. Create the approved account, add the incarcerated person and keep phone and messaging balances separate when the service requires it.
As of August 2026, NJDOC directs friends and family to ViaPath/ConnectNetwork for deposits. JPay payment services ended August 1, 2026. Confirm the person and account type before paying and save the receipt.

Why a New Jersey Record May Be Missing
Problem | Likely reason | Next action |
|---|---|---|
No result in PROMIS/Gavel | Wrong county, spelling difference, municipal matter, sealed record or no Superior Court filing | Try surname only, another county, Municipal Court Case Search or contact the Criminal Division office. |
No result in NJDOC | Person is in county custody, released, transferred, under parole supervision or not sentenced to NJDOC | Check the county jail, State Parole Board or federal locator as appropriate. |
Arrest appears but no court disposition | Case is new, filed under another number, municipal, dismissed before Superior Court filing or the record is incomplete | Contact the court or arresting agency and request the relevant record. |
Full name search fails | Hyphen, suffix, middle name, alias or portal formatting | Use surname only, remove punctuation and compare county and identifiers. |
Old record remains after expungement | Processing delay, private copy or a source outside the order | Check eCourts status, obtain the order and contact the originating record holder or private publisher. |

Are New Jersey arrest records available to the public?
Some court, municipal, judgment, custody and agency records are publicly searchable, but New Jersey does not provide one complete public arrest-record database. Access depends on the record type, agency, court, confidentiality rules, sealing and expungement.
How do I search a New Jersey criminal case by name?
Open NJ Courts Find a Case, choose PROMIS/Gavel, and search using one search type at a time. Start with the last name and county, add the first name, then compare the indictment, accusation, complaint and filing information before selecting a result.
Is PROMIS/Gavel a complete New Jersey criminal background check?
No. PROMIS/Gavel is a public court-case database and warns that it should not be treated as a defendant’s complete court history. Official New Jersey criminal-history records are maintained by the New Jersey State Police.
How do I obtain my own New Jersey criminal history?
Use the NJSP Fingerprint-Based Personal Record Request portal. Follow its identity and fingerprint scheduling instructions, keep the transaction confirmation and protect the resulting report because it contains sensitive information.
Can I use the NJSP 212A portal for my own background check?
No. The NJSP noncriminal-justice 212A portal states that it is not for a personal background check. A person requesting their own record should use the fingerprint-based Personal Record Request route.
How do I find someone arrested in a New Jersey county jail?
Identify the arresting agency and county, then use that county government, sheriff or corrections website. Search by legal name and booking date, and call the booking desk when the arrest is too recent to appear online.
Why is a county jail detainee missing from NJDOC search?
NJDOC search covers people in the state corrections system. A newly arrested person may remain in county custody, may have been released, transferred to another county, placed under parole supervision or held in federal custody.
How does bail work after a New Jersey arrest?
New Jersey largely replaced cash bail with a risk-based pretrial system. A first appearance generally occurs within 48 hours after arrest and commitment, when the court considers release conditions or detention. The individual case and court order control.
How do I apply for a New Jersey Public Defender?
Ask the court for the Uniform Defendant Intake, or 5A Form. It requests residence, criminal history, employment and financial information so the court can decide whether the defendant qualifies for representation.
How do I expunge an eligible New Jersey arrest or criminal record?
Use the free NJ Courts eCourts Expungement System and begin with the case number. Review current eligibility instructions, submit the required information, save the confirmation and keep the final order for later correction or removal requests.
