Georgia Criminal History, County Jail and Court Record Search

Looking for a recent Georgia arrest, a county jail booking, a felony-conviction check or a state-prison inmate? This guide routes you to the correct official system and explains exactly what to enter, what the result means and where to go next.

An arrest is not a conviction. A booking entry records one stage of a case. Confirm identity, current custody and the final court disposition before relying on it.

Start With the Record That Matches Your Question

Arrested recently

Search the sheriff or jail in the county where the person was booked.

Georgia criminal history

Use a participating sheriff or police agency and follow GBI requirements.

State-prison custody

Use GDC Find an Offender, not a county inmate roster.

Court outcome

Use Georgia Courts and the clerk in the county handling the case.

There is no single search that answers every Georgia arrest-record question. County jails, city police agencies, GBI, Georgia Courts, GDC and the Parole Board maintain different parts of the record.

Recent arrests

How to Search Georgia County Jail Bookings and Arrest Records

A recent arrest normally begins at the local level. Search the county where the person was booked, not necessarily the city where the incident happened or the county where the person lives.

Identify the arresting county Check the arresting agency, news release, citation, family notification or court paperwork. A city police department may book the person into the county jail.
Find the correct sheriff Open the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association county directory and locate the county sheriff’s contact information.
Open the sheriff’s official website Look for a menu labelled inmate search, jail roster, current inmates, booking report, detention center or jail information.
Search with fewer details Start with the surname. Add the first name, birth year or booking date only when the result list is too broad.
Open the likely booking Compare the full name, age, photograph, arrest date, booking number, arresting agency, charges and listed bond.
Verify the case in court Use the county clerk or Georgia Courts e-access to check filed charges, hearing dates and disposition.
The jail has no online inmate search

Call the sheriff’s detention division. Ask whether the person is booked, released, transferred or held under another spelling.

You need the incident report

Contact the arresting police department or sheriff’s records unit. A police report is separate from the jail booking and court case.

Search tip: Do not complete every field at once. A suffix, hyphen, middle name or spelling difference can hide the correct result. Search the surname alone before assuming no booking exists.
Identity check

Avoid Matching the Wrong Person to a Georgia Arrest

Match the complete legal name.
Compare age or date of birth.
Check the photograph carefully.
Confirm the county and arresting agency.
Compare the arrest and booking dates.
Use the booking, case or GDC number.
Check aliases and previous surnames.
Verify the final court disposition separately.
Do not identify a person from a name-only result. Georgia has many people with similar names, and an incorrect match can connect an unrelated person to an arrest or criminal case.
GBI and GCIC

How to Get a Georgia Criminal History Record

A Georgia criminal history is broader than one jail booking. GBI explains that it can include identity information, arresting agency, arrest date, charges, submitted judicial dispositions and Georgia correctional custody information.

Decide whose record you need A personal record inspection, employment fingerprint check and search of another person do not use the same process.
Contact a local law-enforcement agency GBI says copies of a person’s own Georgia criminal history can be obtained from most sheriff’s offices or police departments. Ask the agency about identification, fingerprints, appointment and fee requirements.
Prepare identity documents Bring the photo identification and payment method requested by that agency. Do not email a Social Security number or sensitive documents through an unsecured form.
Review every arrest cycle Compare the arresting agency, date, charge and disposition. A missing disposition can make an arrest appear unresolved.
Challenge an incorrect entry Contact GCIC criminal-history records at 404-244-2639. The GCIC lobby handles record inspections and fingerprint services by appointment only.
Personal Georgia record

Start with a participating sheriff or police agency and ask for its criminal-history inspection process.

Employment fingerprinting

Use the employer or licensing agency’s authorised GAPS instructions. GAPS is not a general public inmate-search tool.

Felony-conviction check

Use Georgia Felon Search when the question is limited to qualifying Georgia felony convictions.

Georgia Felon Search is narrower than a complete criminal history. It does not return misdemeanor records, juvenile felony history or information that is sealed, expunged or otherwise unavailable through that service.

Find Georgia Criminal Court Cases and Final Dispositions

The court case is the better source for determining whether a charge remained pending, was amended, dismissed or resulted in a plea, trial or sentence.

Identify the county and court Use the booking record to note the county, charge, arresting agency and any case or warrant number.
Open Georgia Courts e-access Use the official Georgia Courts record-access page. It redirects to a court-record provider and requires an account.
Search by name or case number Begin with the legal surname and first name. Use the case number when several people share the same name.
Compare the correct case Match the county, filing date, charge description, party information and case number.
Review the docket and disposition Look for hearing dates, amendments, continuances, dismissal entries, plea information and final disposition.
Contact the county clerk when needed The clerk can explain how to request a certified record, but cannot provide legal advice about what the case means.
Record term
General meaning
What to check next
Pending
The case has not reached a final disposition.
Check the next hearing and current bond conditions.
Dismissed
The identified charge or case was dismissed.
Confirm whether other charges or cases remain.
Nolle prosequi
The prosecutor chose not to continue prosecution at that time.
Ask the clerk or lawyer about the exact docket entry.
Plea
The defendant entered an accepted plea.
Review the plea, sentence and probation terms.
Disposed
The court has recorded a final outcome.
Open the disposition and sentencing entries.
Bench warrant
A judge may have issued a warrant connected with the court case.
Contact the handling court or a lawyer rather than relying on a private warrant site.
Release guidance

How to Check Georgia Bond and Avoid Release-Payment Scams

Bond is normally controlled by the court and the sheriff holding the person. The type of bond, amount, additional holds and release paperwork all affect whether release can occur.

Open the current booking Look for the bond amount, bond type, court, holds and booking number.
Call the jail using its official number Ask whether bond has been set, which court set it and whether another hold prevents release.
Confirm the accepted method Depending on the order and local procedure, the route may involve cash, property or an authorised professional surety.
Verify a professional bond company Ask the sheriff which professional sureties are authorised in that county. Do not rely only on a sponsored listing or unsolicited caller.
Keep the receipt Save the payment confirmation, bond paperwork, booking number and name of the office that accepted the bond.
Ask what remains before release Processing, another warrant, a detainer, transport or court paperwork can delay release after payment.
Misdemeanor timing: Georgia’s Judicial Council bench guidance states that a person arrested on a misdemeanor should be brought before a judge for a bail determination as soon as possible and no later than 48 hours after arrest. Other charges and circumstances can follow different procedures.

Open the Georgia misdemeanor bail bench card

Possible scam: Do not pay through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers or a payment link supplied by an unexpected caller. Call the jail or court using a number from its official website.
State custody

Search Georgia Department of Corrections Inmates

GDC Find an Offender is for people connected with the Georgia state corrections system. It is not the first place to search for someone arrested recently and still held in a county jail.

Open GDC Find an Offender Go to the official GDC offender-search page.
Use the GDC ID when available A unique GDC identifier is more reliable than a common name.
Search by legal name When no ID is available, enter the surname and first name. Compare the photograph and description carefully.
Open the matching profile Check the GDC ID, current institution, case number and status shown.
Locate the facility Use GDC facility search to obtain the current address, telephone number and facility-specific instructions.
Call when the location is unclear GDC inmate concerns and transfer questions can be directed to 404-656-4661.
County jail versus GDC: A person may be sentenced to state custody but remain temporarily housed at a county jail while awaiting transfer. Keep the county booking number and GDC ID when both exist.
Family and visitors

Georgia Prison Visitation, Phone, Mail and Money Guidance

GDC visitation steps

Find the current facility Use GDC offender search and confirm that the person has completed transfer or diagnostic processing.
Complete the visitor application Download the official visitation request form. Every visitor, including a child, requires an application.
Add supporting documents GDC instructs applicants to include requested photo identification and relationship documents. Consent forms must be notarised when required.
Mail the application to the facility Send it to the institution where the offender is currently housed. GDC states that emailed visitor applications are not accepted.
Wait for approval The visitor must be approved before requesting an appointment.
Schedule through the official portal Use the GDC visit-request system after approval and follow the facility’s date and arrival instructions.
Published GDC visit limits

GDC states that visits are generally no more than two hours and up to four approved visitors may attend together.

Dress and contraband

Review the current dress code. Mobile phones, smartwatches, drugs and tobacco can result in denial, removal or arrest.

County-jail visits differ

Do not apply GDC prison rules to a county detention center. Contact the specific sheriff for local video or in-person visit rules.

Questions to ask before hiring

Do you regularly handle cases in this county?
Who will appear at hearings?
What work is included in the quoted fee?
Are investigator and expert costs separate?
How will updates and calls be handled?
Can I receive the fee agreement in writing?
Avoid guaranteed outcomes. A lawyer or bond company cannot responsibly promise dismissal, a particular sentence or immediate release.

Corrections and restrictions

Correct or Restrict a Georgia Criminal History Record

Georgia commonly uses the term record restriction. Restricting an eligible record limits its availability for qualifying non-criminal-justice purposes; it is not the same as pretending the arrest never occurred in every government system.

Obtain your Georgia criminal history Review the complete arrest cycle, including the arresting agency, arrest date, charge and disposition.
Identify the exact problem Determine whether the record has the wrong person, wrong charge, missing disposition or an eligible arrest that has not been restricted.
Use the correct date-based route For arrests after July 1, 2013, GBI directs people to contact the prosecutor about restriction. For arrests before that date, the application generally begins with the arresting agency.
Submit supporting documents Include the required disposition, identification and application material. Keep copies and record the date submitted.
Check the updated record After processing, obtain a new criminal-history copy to confirm that the intended update appears.
Handle private websites separately Restricting or correcting the official record does not automatically remove every copied mugshot or private database page.

A pardon is different. The State Board of Pardons and Paroles explains that a pardon becomes part of the criminal history but does not erase or expunge the conviction.

Georgia Arrest Records FAQs

How do I search Georgia arrest records?

For a recent arrest, identify the county where the person was booked and use that sheriff or detention center’s inmate search. For a broader Georgia criminal history, follow GBI guidance and request the record through a participating sheriff or police agency.

Is there one statewide Georgia jail inmate search?

No. County jails are operated locally, so current booking searches usually belong to the county sheriff. GDC Find an Offender is for the Georgia state corrections system and may not show a person recently held in a county jail.

What information appears on a Georgia criminal history record?

GBI states that a Georgia criminal history can include identity information, arresting agency, arrest date, charges, judicial dispositions submitted by criminal-justice agencies and Georgia correctional custody information.

What is Georgia Felon Search?

Georgia Felon Search is a GCIC-connected service for checking qualifying felony convictions in Georgia. It does not return misdemeanor records, juvenile felony history or information that is sealed, expunged or otherwise unavailable through the service.

How do I find a Georgia criminal court case?

Use the Georgia Courts e-access page, create or use the required provider account and search by legal name or case number. Confirm the county, filing date and charge, then contact the county clerk when a certified or missing record is needed.

How do I check a Georgia bond amount?

Open the county jail booking and look for the bond amount, type, court and holds. Call the jail using its official number to confirm the current release order and accepted payment method before paying anyone.

How do I visit an inmate in a Georgia prison?

First confirm the GDC facility. Complete a visitor application for every visitor, include the requested supporting documents and mail the application to the facility. After approval, request a visit through the official GDC scheduling portal.

How do I find a Georgia public defender?

Use the Georgia Public Defender Council county search or call 800-676-4432 Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Appointment and financial-eligibility decisions are handled through the court and local defender office.

How do I restrict or correct a Georgia arrest record?
